Where Sorrow and God’s Presence Meet

Updated: Sep 3

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

—Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

There’s a sacredness to sorrow that’s hard to explain until you’ve been there yourself. In moments of deep grief, when words fail and tears fall freely, something surprising happens: the nearness of God becomes unmistakably real. It’s not always loud or obvious—sometimes it’s simply the way peace creeps in when you least expect it or the strength you find to take one more step when you thought you had nothing left. But there, in the broken places, God shows up.

You’ve probably heard someone say, “I don’t know how I got through that season, except for the presence of God.” Maybe you’ve said it yourself. It’s because suffering has a way of stripping away distractions and defenses, leaving our hearts tender, vulnerable, and wide open. And into that tender space, the Lord steps gently. Near. Close.

A God Who Draws Near

Psalm 34:18 tells us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…” He doesn't watch from a distance or wait for us to get it together. He draws near. His nearness is not conditional. It’s not based on the strength of our prayers or the clarity of our faith. It’s simply who He is: a faithful, compassionate Father who stays close when life falls apart.

Another beautiful picture of God’s care is found in Psalm 3:3, which says, “But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” Can you picture that? The Lord encircling you - protecting, shielding, covering - and then gently lifting your downcast face to meet His gaze. That’s not the posture of a God who is far off or indifferent. That’s the intimate, intentional compassion of a Savior who sees your pain and enters into it with you.

Jesus modeled this so clearly in John 11, when His dear friend Lazarus died. Jesus knew He would raise Lazarus from the dead. He could have skipped straight to the miracle. But instead, He stopped to grieve. He stood beside Mary and Martha and wept.

The Son of God, with all the power of heaven at His fingertips, chose to feel their pain before fixing the problem. That is the Jesus who is with you today. He is not impatient with your sorrow. He is not rushing you through grief. He is sitting with you in it, weeping when you weep, holding your shattered heart in His hands.

You Are Not Alone

This means that on the days when it’s hard to breathe, when memories sting and loss feels fresh, when the world keeps moving but you’re standing still - you are not alone. The Lord is close. Not just as a concept or a theological idea, but as a real, present comfort. He surrounds you. He protects you. And He gently lifts your head to remind you that you are seen, loved, and not forgotten.

Are you walking through a season of grief right now? Maybe your heart is heavy with unspoken sorrow or a recent loss. If that’s where you are today, take a deep breath and whisper a prayer. Thank God for being near. Even if you can’t feel Him, trust that He is closer than your next breath. Let Psalm 34:18 be your anchor today. You don’t have to hold it all together. You don’t have to pretend you’re okay. You only have to lean into the One who promises to stay close to the brokenhearted and to save those crushed in spirit.

And He will. He always does.

A Prayer for the Brokenhearted

Lord, thank You for the promise of Your nearness. In seasons when grief overwhelms and sorrow feels too heavy to carry, I cling to the truth that You are close. You see my tears, You hear my cries, and You do not turn away. You are my refuge and my shield, my comfort and my strength.

Today, I surrender my broken heart to You. I don’t have all the answers, but I trust that You do. Help me to sense Your presence even in the silence. Lift my head when I cannot lift it myself. Wrap me in Your peace and hold me steady when I feel like I’m falling apart.

Thank You for being a Savior who weeps with me, walks with me, and promises never to leave me. Give me grace for this day, hope for tomorrow, and the courage to keep trusting You through the pain.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
