“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)
As Thanksgiving approaches, our hearts often drift toward gratitude. We count blessings, reflect on God’s goodness, and gather around tables to give thanks. But Paul’s words in 1Thessalonians 5:18 invite us to something deeper than a holiday ritual. He calls us to a lifestyle: “Give thanks in all circumstances.”
What secret about gratitude does Paul know? Why does he call us to such an intentional, often uncomfortable practice? Because gratitude changes us.
When we give thanks in all circumstances, we shift our focus from what we cannot control to the One who is in control. Gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s a declaration of trust. It says:
Lord, I can’t fix this. I don’t understand this. My heart feels heavy. But I choose to thank You anyway. I choose to believe You are working for my good even here, in this moment I wish was different. I praise You because You are faithful, and I am not alone.
When we choose gratitude, it builds a spiritual shield against bitterness and resentment. It protects our hearts from the enemy’s schemes to steal joy when life gets hard. Gratitude echoes Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12:10: “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Why? Because when we are at our weakest, God’s power shines the brightest.
The Gratitude Challenge
Want to see how gratitude can shape your heart and mindset? Take this seven-day challenge:
1. Morning: Before your feet hit the floor, thank God for three things in your life.
2. Throughout the Day: Notice blessings – big or small – and speak your gratitude
out loud.
3. Evening: Thank God for three challenges you are facing and trust Him to use them for your good and His glory.
Are you ready to start today? Take a deep breath, quiet your heart, and, right now, whisper three things you’re thankful for. Once you’ve done this, ask God to give you eyes to see blessings from Him as you go about your day. Then, be sure to thank Him again as your head hits your pillow tonight. Try this for one week and see what shifts in your heart. You may find gratitude becoming a life-long habit.
Father, thank You for Your goodness and presence in every circumstance.
Forgive us when we complain or fixate on what feels wrong. Today, we choose
gratitude, not because life is perfect, but because You are faithful. Teach us to
see Your hand even in challenges and to rest in Your promises. Help us live with a thankful heart, one that gives You praise in all things.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
