A Lesson on a Leash

“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.”

 - Jeremiah 10:23 (NIV)

There is an adorable, fluffy white puppy that lives on our street. Several times a day, I see it heading out for a walk with its master. The puppy wears a small harness and leash that connects securely to its owner’s wrist. That leash gives the puppy freedom—freedom to sniff, explore, and delight in the world around it—while remaining within a safe distance and under the watchful care of someone who knows far more than the puppy ever could.

What captivates me most is not the leash itself, but the awareness the puppy has learned. When the pair approaches a street, an obstacle, or another dog, the puppy instinctively pauses and looks up at its master’s face. It waits for direction. With a glance or a quiet command, the master communicates what the puppy needs to know: when to stop, when to move forward, when to stay close, and when to avoid danger altogether. Because of that training and trust, the puppy walks confidently—tail wagging, steps light, heart secure. The discipline it has learned does not diminish its joy; it actually creates it.

That puppy could view the leash and the training as limitations. It could see the harness as a restriction keeping it from running wherever it pleases. But instead, the puppy experiences those boundaries as safety, guidance, and freedom. It moves through the world protected, not constrained.

When God’s Word Feels Restrictive

At times, God’s Word can feel like a harness—rules, commands, and boundaries that seem to restrict our independence or dampen our desires. When we lose sight of the heart of our Master, Jesus Christ, Scripture can begin to feel heavy or legalistic. Resentment may quietly grow. We may wonder if obedience means missing out on something better, easier, or more exciting. The lie creeps in that God’s ways are outdated or overly cautious, holding us back from the “real” life everyone else seems to be enjoying.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth.

God’s Word is not a list of arbitrary rules designed to control us; it is a loving set of boundaries meant to protect us. Like the leash on the puppy, Scripture keeps us from wandering into harm we cannot yet see. It steadies us when the road ahead is dangerous. It redirects us when our instincts would lead us into pain, regret, or brokenness. At times, it even rescues us from ourselves, our impulses, our pride, and our limited perspective.

The tension we feel often comes down to trust. Do we believe that God sees what we cannot?

Do we trust that He knows the terrain ahead? Or do we insist on directing our own steps, convinced we know better, only to find ourselves overwhelmed, anxious, or spiritually weary?

True freedom is not found in the absence of boundaries but in walking within the care of a wise and loving Master. When we learn to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord by seeking His face, listening for His voice, and responding in obedience, we begin to experience the peace that comes from being led rather than driven. Obedience becomes less about obligation and more about relationship. The harness of God’s Word no longer feels confining; it feels secure.

And just like the puppy, confidence grows with practice. The more we look to the Master for direction before making decisions, responding in conflict, or stepping into the unknown, the more natural that posture becomes. Over time, we discover that life lived under God’s guidance is not smaller, but fuller; not restricted, but deeply free.

Pause to Ponder

If you struggle with viewing God’s Word as legalistic or limiting, bring that honestly before Him today. Ask Him to show you His heart behind His commands. Where might He be offering protection rather than restriction? How can you more intentionally develop the habit of looking to the Lord through prayer, Scripture, and quiet surrender, when you’re unsure of your next step or facing a difficult decision?

Sometimes, the safest and most freeing thing we can do is simply pause and look to the Master.
